The Teaching Council exists to
- enable teachers to take responsibility for the standards of the teaching profession
- provide a strong unified teachers' voice on professional issues
- promote and support the implementation of the Treaty of Waitangi
- work for the improvement of educational achievement for Maori children
- promote teachers' professional development
- strengthen the setting and maintenance of minimum standards of training and entry into the teaching profession
